The Satin beed is a six class breed. Junior bucks under 6 months of age, and not over 8 pounds. Junior does under 6 months of age, and not over 8 1/2 pounds. Intermediate bucks 6 to 8 months of age, and not over 9 pounds. Intermediate does 6 to 8 months of age, and not over 9 1/2 pounds. Senior bucks 8 months and older, weighing 8 1/2 to 10 1/2 pounds, with ideal weight of 9 1/2 pounds. Senior does 8 months of age and older, weighing 9 to 11 pounds, with ideal weight of 10 pounds.

The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes eleven varieties in the Satin Rabbits. They are Black, Blue, Broken Group, Californian, Chinchilla, Chocolate, Copper, Otter, Red, Siamese, and White. The Broken Group consists of all of the recognized colors broken up with areas of white.

The first Satin Rabbit appeared as a mutation in a litter of Chocolate Havana. Due to the mutation light is able to pass through the hair shaft. This translucence gives the fur a noticable shiney appearance.
